A private two-guest retreat positioned at coordinates where the island still belongs to itself — volcanic ridgelines to the north, the deep blue of the Bali Sea to the east.

Intimate, Deliberate, Precise
Bali Timur occupies a site at the eastern margin of the island's cultural heartland, positioned between the ceremonial landscape of Karangasem and the productive rice country that stretches toward the coast. The coordinates place it within reach of Candidasa, the black-sand beaches of Jasri, and the ancient water palace of Tirta Gangga — yet the property itself reads as a studied withdrawal from all of that, a place designed to slow the pace down rather than accelerate it.

The property is calibrated for two guests. This is not a reduced version of a larger villa — it is a space conceived at this scale from the outset, which means proportions feel right, light lands where it should, and nothing competes for attention. The architecture draws on the Balinese compound tradition of separating functions across distinct pavilions, with open-air transitions that keep the interior connected to the garden climate at all times. Stone, timber, and woven natural fibre appear throughout, materials that age with heat and humidity rather than against it.
The surrounding neighbourhood moves at a different rhythm from the tourist corridors of the south. Mornings carry the sound of temple bells from the nearby pura, afternoons the call of birds across the paddy edges, evenings the particular quiet of a region where darkness is still genuinely dark. The local market at Amlapura, the nearest town of scale, is twenty minutes by scooter and offers everything from fresh produce to ceremonial offerings in concentrated form.
Practically, the property is accessed by a lane off the main eastern road, navigable by car or motorbike. Airport transfer from Ngurah Rai takes approximately ninety minutes depending on traffic and route. Direct booking through this site secures the lowest available rate, full host communication from arrival through departure, and no third-party service fees added to the total.
East Bali light is specific — harder in the morning, golden and oblique by late afternoon. These images were made in both conditions to show the property as it actually reads across a day.
Fibre connection with password provided on arrival. Consistent coverage throughout the pavilion, bedroom, and terrace areas.
Secure enclosed parking within the compound for one scooter or small vehicle, accessible directly from the entry lane.
Gas hob, compact oven, refrigerator, and a complete set of cookware and crockery sourced locally. Pantry stocked with coffee and tea on arrival.
A private pool within the compound, maintained daily. Dimensions suited to two guests, positioned for afternoon sun and morning shade.
Inverter air conditioning unit in the bedroom, independently controlled. The open pavilion relies on ceiling fans and natural ventilation.
Large-diameter ceiling fans fitted in both the living pavilion and bedroom, operating independently from the air conditioning system.
A private ensuite finished in polished local stone with rainfall shower head, hot water system, and quality towels changed every three days.
Laundry collection and return available on request through the host, typically a 24-hour turnaround, priced separately per kilogram.
Light housekeeping each morning including towel change, surface cleaning, and restocking of bathroom consumables. Full linen change every three days.
Walled compound with a lockable gate. Digital lock or key access to the main bedroom provided at check-in with backup contact for the host.
Mature tropical planting provides natural shade and privacy. Garden maintained regularly; guests are welcome to use the shaded seating area at all hours.
Host provides a curated written guide to the immediate area — markets, temples, beaches, and local warungs — updated seasonally and shared on arrival.

The central communal space operates without fixed walls on two sides, relying on deep overhangs and ceiling fans to manage climate. A daybed and low seating face the garden directly, with the kitchen positioned immediately behind.
A compact but fully equipped kitchen with a two-burner gas hob, small oven, refrigerator, and everything required for serious cooking. Stocked with coffee, tea, and basic pantry items on arrival.
A walled garden surrounding the compound, planted with mature tropical species that provide overhead canopy by mid-morning. Stone paths connect the pavilions and a shaded seating area anchors the far end.
A stone-floored terrace adjacent to the kitchen accommodates outdoor dining for two. Oriented west, it catches the late-afternoon light and remains usable well into the evening once the day heat drops.
Arrival happens in the late afternoon light that East Bali reserves for itself — amber and lateral, cutting low across the rice fields before it disappears behind the western hills. The gate opens onto the compound and the property arranges itself in front of you without ceremony: garden, pavilion, the sound of water. You do not need to be shown around. The scale is small enough that orientation is immediate.
Morning begins early here because the landscape does. First light hits the volcanic silhouette of Agung before it reaches anything else, and the bird activity in the garden starts at the same time. Coffee is straightforward — the kitchen is stocked for it. You take it outside. The air at this hour carries a temperature that disappears by nine, so the serious business of sitting still and drinking coffee should happen before that.
Mid-morning opens in any direction. The black-sand beach at Jasri is under thirty minutes by scooter on roads that remain navigable. Tirta Gangga, the royal water garden built in 1948 by the last raja of Karangasem, takes forty minutes and rewards every one of them. Alternatively, nothing happens at all, which the property accommodates without complaint. The garden produces enough shade and the open pavilion enough air movement that the midday heat becomes something you sit inside rather than escape from.
Afternoons tend toward the pool or the terrace, depending on the sun angle. The kitchen handles dinner preparation seriously — local produce from Amlapura market is specific and fresh. By evening the compound is entirely quiet, the kind of quiet that registers as a texture rather than an absence, and the night sky in this part of Bali remains largely unobstructed by light pollution.

28 minutes by scooter
A long volcanic black-sand beach with strong shore break, popular with local surfers and largely absent from the standard tourist circuit. Warung food available on-site.

20 minutes by scooter
The principal market of the Karangasem regency, operating from early morning with fresh produce, ceremonial supplies, and cooked food stalls at prices untouched by tourism.

55 minutes by car
Bali's largest and most sacred temple complex, occupying the southern slopes of Gunung Agung at 1,000 metres elevation. Most compelling visited early morning before tour groups arrive.
The Karangasem regency was never absorbed into the tourism economy the way the south was. Its markets, temples, and coastal roads remain calibrated to local time, and understanding why requires going back to the 1963 eruption of Agung and what it displaced.
The royal water garden of Karangasem receives its first organised tour groups by nine. Before that, the tiered pools and stone nagas belong to the temple priests, the local swimmers, and anyone who set an alarm. What the early hour reveals is worth the discipline.
Volcanic sand changes the quality of the light near the water. The beaches from Jasri south toward Candidasa carry a dark heaviness that white-sand coastlines do not, and they attract a correspondingly different kind of visitor — or, often, no visitor at all.
Standard check-in begins at 2:00 PM. If you are arriving earlier, the host can often accommodate a bag drop and garden access from 10:00 AM depending on the preceding guest's departure. Early check-in requests should be sent at least 48 hours in advance.
Check-out is by 11:00 AM. Late check-out until 1:00 PM may be available on request, subject to the following booking. There is no additional charge for late check-out when the schedule permits. Confirm directly with the host the evening before departure.
The property accommodates a maximum of two guests. This reflects both the physical scale of the compound and the intent of the design. Additional visitors are not permitted to stay overnight. Day visitors may be discussed with the host in advance.
Yes. There is enclosed, secure parking within the compound for one scooter or small car. The access lane from the main road is navigable by standard sedan or four-wheel-drive vehicles. Scooter rental can be arranged through the host at local market rates.
Pets are not accommodated at this property. This policy applies to all animals regardless of size or breed, in consideration of the garden planting and the proximity of neighbouring properties and their livestock.
